Zolsha Howden Review — Curry Bible Score 6.98/10

7.0 / 10

Our fifth Curry Bible visit took us to Zolsha in Howden, a modern Indian kitchen, bar and lounge on 4 Bridgegate, Howden, Goole, DN14 7AB.

This one had the ingredients for a very good night.

Zolsha has its own car park, a pleasant location, a warm appearance on arrival and the kind of setting that immediately makes you think, “Right, this could be decent.” It presents itself as more than just a basic curry house, with a modern lounge feel, a proper bar setup and a menu covering traditional and contemporary Indian dishes.

And to be fair, parts of the night were genuinely good.

The food, in particular, showed real quality. Taste scores were high across the table, with every reviewer giving taste at least 8.5/10 except where the score still remained strong. That tells you something important: Zolsha can cook.

But Curry Bible reviews are not just about whether one dish tasted nice.

We judge the whole curry night.

And the full experience at Zolsha was more complicated.

The final Curry Bible score was 6.98/10.

That puts Zolsha in a frustrating category: good, but not great. Close to a 7, clearly capable of more, but held back by issues that should not be ignored.

The Curry Bible Verdict

Zolsha is a tricky one because the food was far better than the final score might suggest.

Several taste scores were excellent. Jack gave taste 9.2, Oliver gave it 9, Damon gave it 9, and Louis gave it 8.7. That is not a weak food night. That is a table clearly recognising that Zolsha can produce some very good dishes.

So why did it not score higher?

Because the experience around the food let it down.

Service was inconsistent. Some members felt reasonably looked after, while others found it slow, uneven or disorganised. That split shows clearly in the scores: Jack gave service 7.9 and Damon gave 8.5, while Luke gave 4.4, Oliver gave 4, and Hamish gave 5.2.

That is a massive gap.

When half the table feels looked after and the other half does not, something is not running smoothly.

Then there were the facilities.

The men’s toilet situation was poor on our visit. There was only one cubicle, it was very cold, it was not especially clean, and the lock was not working. That led to an unwanted surprise for one of the group, which is funny afterwards, but not exactly ideal while you are trying to enjoy a meal.

There was also an issue with an extra portion of rice being brought to the table that we had not ordered, and then being charged for it.

Small details? Maybe.

But Curry Bible is built on the full night, and those details stack up.

Individual Curry Bible Scores

Jack’s Ratings

CategoryScore
Menu Choice7.8
Service7.9
Taste9.2
Drinks7.8
Value for Money8.3
Average8.2/10

Jack had the strongest score of the night. For him, Zolsha delivered a properly good experience, especially on taste and value.

Louis’ Ratings

CategoryScore
Menu Choice7
Service6
Taste8.7
Drinks6.5
Value for Money6
Average6.84/10

Louis’ score shows the mixed nature of the night well. The food was clearly strong, but the rest of the experience did not quite match it.

Luke’s Ratings

CategoryScore
Menu Choice7.5
Service4.4
Taste8.5
Drinks5
Value for Money7
Average6.48/10

Luke rated the taste highly, but service and drinks pulled his score down. This is the pattern that defines the review: good food, weaker experience.

Oliver’s Ratings

CategoryScore
Menu Choice6
Service4
Taste9
Drinks8
Value for Money4
Average6.2/10

Oliver’s score is probably the clearest example of Zolsha’s problem. A 9 for taste and 8 for drinks should usually produce a very strong average, but service and value stopped that happening.

Damon’s Ratings

CategoryScore
Menu Choice7
Service8.5
Taste9
Drinks6.5
Value for Money5.5
Average7.3/10

Damon had one of the more positive experiences with service, scoring it 8.5. The taste also landed strongly, but value for money kept the final average from climbing higher.

Hamish’s Ratings

CategoryScore
Menu Choice7.7
Service5.2
Taste8.5
Drinks6
Value for Money7
Average6.88/10

Hamish’s scores sit right in the middle of the overall verdict. Good food, decent menu, fair value, but service was not strong enough.

What Zolsha Got Right

The food was the clear win.

Across the board, taste scores were strong. That is the part Zolsha should be proud of, because food is still the heart of any curry house review. You can have the nicest room in the world, but if the curry is forgettable, nobody cares.

Zolsha’s food was not forgettable.

The setting also helped. The restaurant had a warm appearance, parking was a plus, and the quieter Howden location gave the night a relaxed feel. It was the sort of place where you could have a good social evening, and in many ways, we did.

There were laughs. There was good company. There was a lively enough mood around the table.

But again, Curry Bible scores the restaurant experience, not just how funny the table was.

What Held It Back

The biggest issue was inconsistency.

Service was not viewed the same way by everyone. That sometimes happens, but when the scores range from 4/10 to 8.5/10, it suggests the experience was uneven rather than simply a matter of taste.

The toilet issue also should not be brushed off. A restaurant’s facilities are part of the visit. If they are cold, unclean or not properly lockable, that affects the night.

And then there was the extra rice.

Being charged for something we did not order is never going to help a value score. It might have been a mistake, but mistakes still count when they affect the bill.

That is why Zolsha ended up just under 7 instead of pushing into the 7s or even higher.

Final Thoughts

Zolsha was a good night out, but a mixed restaurant experience.

The food showed real potential. In fact, if this review were judged on taste alone, Zolsha would have scored much higher. There were strong dishes, solid flavours and plenty to like from the kitchen.

But the full experience did not match the food.

Service was uneven. The facilities were disappointing. The extra rice charge left a bad taste, and not the spicy kind.

So where does that leave Zolsha?

Honestly, in the “could be great” category.

A final Curry Bible score of 6.98/10 is not bad. It is nearly a 7, and there was enough good food on the table to show Zolsha has quality.

But it also proves how quickly the small things can drag a curry night down.

Would we go back? Possibly.

Would we expect better next time? Definitely.

Would we say Zolsha has the food to score higher? Absolutely.

It just needs the rest of the experience to catch up.
