Our fourth Curry Bible outing took us to Shimla in Armthorpe, a well-known Indian restaurant and takeaway on 10a Church Street, Armthorpe, Doncaster, DN3 3AE.
This was one we expected to be strong.
Shimla has a big reputation locally. It is a familiar name around Doncaster, has plenty of positive attention behind it, and presents itself as a proper established curry house rather than some random unknown spot. Their own website highlights a large menu, regional recipes, old favourites, new additions, and banqueting nights.
In theory, this should have been one of the safest Curry Bible visits so far.
Unfortunately, theory got absolutely battered.
This was not the night we expected. Whether it was an off night, a staffing issue, bad timing, or just one of those evenings where nothing seemed to click, our visit did not match the reputation.
The final Curry Bible score was 4.92/10.
That is a tough score. It is not one we throw around for drama. It reflects the experience we had on the night.

The Curry Bible Verdict
Let’s be clear before anyone starts sharpening the poppadoms.
We do not think Shimla is automatically a bad restaurant.
The wider reputation suggests this was probably a bad night, not a fair picture of what Shimla can usually do. Plenty of people clearly rate it highly, and a restaurant does not build that kind of local name by being terrible every night.
But Curry Bible reviews are based on the visit we actually had.
And the visit we had was poor.
Service was the biggest issue across the table. Every reviewer scored it low, with Oliver going as low as 2/10, Louis and Hamish both giving 3/10, and nobody rating it above 4.1/10. That is not a small wobble. That is a full-table pattern.
Taste also struggled. Nobody gave the food a properly strong score, and several scores landed around the 4s and 5s. For a curry house with Shimla’s reputation, that was disappointing.
Drinks were another problem, especially with Damon giving 0/10. A zero for drinks is never a casual detail. That is the sort of score that suggests the drinks side of the night completely failed for that reviewer.
And then came the now-famous survival mission: Jack leaving the building and returning with a crate of 22 beers to rescue the mood.
That probably tells you everything about how the night was going.
Individual Curry Bible Scores
Jack’s Ratings
| Category | Score |
|---|---|
| Menu Choice | 6.8 |
| Service | 4.1 |
| Taste | 4.9 |
| Drinks | 5 |
| Value for Money | 5.6 |
| Average | 5.28/10 |
Jack’s score was one of the higher ones, but even then, it only reached 5.28/10. Menu choice was acceptable, but service and taste pulled the experience down.
Louis’ Ratings
| Category | Score |
|---|---|
| Menu Choice | 7.5 |
| Service | 3 |
| Taste | 4 |
| Drinks | 5 |
| Value for Money | 4.4 |
| Average | 4.78/10 |
Louis gave Shimla a decent menu score, but the rest of the experience clearly did not land. His 3 for service and 4 for taste show where the night went wrong.
Luke’s Ratings
| Category | Score |
|---|---|
| Menu Choice | 7 |
| Service | 3.3 |
| Taste | 6.8 |
| Drinks | 3 |
| Value for Money | 4.7 |
| Average | 4.96/10 |
Luke was slightly more positive on taste, giving it 6.8, but service, drinks and value for money dragged the average below 5.
Oliver’s Ratings
| Category | Score |
|---|---|
| Menu Choice | 8 |
| Service | 2 |
| Taste | 5 |
| Drinks | 6 |
| Value for Money | 4 |
| Average | 5.0/10 |
Oliver gave the menu the best score of the night, but the 2 for service is brutal. Even with an 8 for menu choice, the overall experience only came out at 5/10.
Damon’s Ratings
| Category | Score |
|---|---|
| Menu Choice | 6.5 |
| Service | 4 |
| Taste | 4 |
| Drinks | 0 |
| Value for Money | 7 |
| Average | 4.3/10 |
Damon’s scorecard says it plainly: the value may have had some merit, but the night itself did not work. A 0 for drinks and 4 for taste are hard to recover from.
Hamish’s Ratings
| Category | Score |
|---|---|
| Menu Choice | 6.3 |
| Service | 3 |
| Taste | 5 |
| Drinks | 6 |
| Value for Money | 5.6 |
| Average | 5.18/10 |
Hamish’s scores were slightly steadier, but still low overall. Service again stands out as the main weakness.
Final Score Breakdown
| Reviewer | Average |
|---|---|
| Jack | 5.28 |
| Louis | 4.78 |
| Luke | 4.96 |
| Oliver | 5.0 |
| Damon | 4.3 |
| Hamish | 5.18 |
| Final Curry Bible Score | 4.92/10 |
What Went Wrong
The biggest problem was that the full experience never really recovered.
The menu choice was not bad. In fact, it was the best-scoring area overall. That lines up with Shimla’s own website, which promotes a large menu with more than 75 dishes.
But a big menu cannot save a poor night on its own.
The service scores were consistently low. The taste scores were underwhelming. Drinks became part of the problem rather than part of the night. Value for money varied, but it was not strong enough to rescue the final average.
That combination is deadly for a Curry Bible score.
A restaurant can survive one weak area. It is much harder to survive three or four.
Final Thoughts
Shimla was a disappointing Curry Bible visit.
Not because we wanted it to be. Quite the opposite. We expected this to be one of the better nights, and that expectation probably made the result feel worse.
A restaurant with Shimla’s reputation should not be written off from one bad visit. That would be lazy, and it would ignore the fact that many people clearly have much better experiences there than we did.
So this review should be read properly:
This is not Curry Bible declaring Shimla finished.
This is Curry Bible saying that on our visit, Shimla fell well short.
The final score of 4.92/10 reflects one night, one table, one experience. And yes, based on that night, the score is fair.
Will Shimla get another chance from us in the future?
Probably.
Because if the reputation is real, then there is a much better version of Shimla than the one we saw.
