There are curry houses that disappoint you, curry houses that surprise you, and curry houses that leave you scratching your head because everything was good — genuinely good — but somehow the night still felt like it was missing a final spark.
Goa Spice in Mexborough falls firmly into that last category.
Located at 2 Swinton Road, Mexborough, S64 9JB, inside The Empress Rooms building, Goa Spice makes a proper first impression. Public listings describe it as an Indian restaurant serving Indian, Asian, Balti and Bangladeshi food, with reservations, takeaway, table service, a full bar and free off-street parking available.
From the outside, it looks smart. The building has character, the entrance feels confident, and the restaurant carries itself well before you have even stepped through the door.
It has that slightly grand, old-building presence that makes you think:
Right. This could be a good one.
And honestly, it was.
Mostly.
The final Curry Bible score was 7.84/10.
That is a very strong score, and it reflects a restaurant that performed well across almost every category. But this was also one of those nights where the numbers do not quite tell the full story.

The Curry Bible Verdict
Inside, Goa Spice continued the strong first impression.
The décor was clean, bold and stylish, with the black-and-gold Goa branding giving the place a polished, premium feel. It was tidy, spacious and clearly well looked after. This was not a tired curry house clinging to old wallpaper and nostalgia.
Goa Spice looked the part.
Then the food arrived, and to be fair, the kitchen backed up the appearance.
The starters looked fresh and well presented. The sheek kebab had good colour and texture, served simply with salad, cucumber, tomato and lime. Nothing looked lazy. Nothing looked thrown together. It was straightforward, but done properly.
The mains were even stronger.
The curries had rich, deep colour. The rice looked well cooked. The naan was exactly what you want to see: blistered, soft-looking, generous and clearly fresh. Once the food landed, the table had that proper feast feeling.
The curries looked hearty. The portions looked strong. The whole meal gave the impression that the kitchen knew what it was doing.
Drinks were good too.
This was not one of those nights where the food had to drag the rest of the experience behind it. Across the board, Goa Spice performed well. Food, drinks, service, setting and presentation all came out strong.
The staff also deserve credit. Service was courteous, attentive and efficient without becoming overbearing. There was no sense of being ignored, no delays that broke the rhythm of the evening, and no awkwardness in how the meal was handled.
It felt like a properly run restaurant.
So what was wrong?
Honestly, not much.
But there was something.

The Strange Silence
The restaurant was silent.
Not quiet.
Silent.
Apart from Curry Bible and one drunken but silent man sat alone at the bar, the place felt empty. That gave the night a strange atmosphere.
It had the feeling of a restaurant that should have been buzzing, but simply was not.
That is the difficult part of reviewing Goa Spice. You cannot really punish a restaurant heavily for being quiet. Some people would actually love that. For some diners, a peaceful curry house is a blessing.
But for a Curry Bible night, where the full atmosphere matters even when it is not officially scored, it was impossible not to notice.
The room looked good.
The food was good.
The service was good.
The drinks were good.
But the energy was missing.
It felt like we could have been the only people on the planet that night and we would not have known any different.
And that is why Goa Spice is such an odd review. Technically, it did almost everything right. Emotionally, the night felt slightly hollow.

What Goa Spice Got Right
Goa Spice got a lot right.
The venue looked excellent. The food was strong. The drinks were good. The service was courteous. The value was solid. The presentation showed care. The whole place felt polished and properly run.
That is why it scored well.
There was no major food complaint. No service collapse. No poor-value disaster. No drinks failure. No messy venue issue.
On paper, Goa Spice was one of the most balanced curry houses we had visited.

What Held It Back
Atmosphere.
That is the honest answer.
Not in the sense that the restaurant did anything wrong. It was not loud, chaotic, uncomfortable or badly run. It was actually the opposite.
It was too quiet.
That strange silence made the night feel flatter than it should have. Goa Spice looked like a restaurant that deserved a full room, conversation, movement and life. Instead, it felt empty.
Again, some people might prefer that.
But for this visit, it made an otherwise strong curry night feel like it was missing the final spark.
Final Thoughts
Goa Spice is a strong curry house.
There is no getting around that.
The food was great, the service was courteous, the drinks were good, the value was strong, and the restaurant itself looked fantastic. It scored well across every category and did not produce a single poor individual average.
That says a lot.
But this was also one of those visits where the numbers do not quite capture the whole experience. Technically, Goa Spice did almost everything right. Emotionally, the night felt a little hollow.
The silence was impossible to ignore.
Not bad.
Not offensive.
Just strange.
Still, Curry Bible judges what is in front of us, and what was in front of us was a very good curry house serving very good food in a very good setting.
Goa Spice deserves respect.
On a busier night, with a bit more life in the room, this place could easily feel like something special.
